A former deputy governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, believes his popularity will earn him a big success in the September 22 governorship election in the state.

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) said this during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

“I am the most popular candidate in Osun State now,” he said. “The issue is that Osun politics is Omisore and others.”

“Like I said, you don’t just do a bedroom analysis or beer parlour analysis; let us wait and see the result of the election,” he added.

Omisore was deputy governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003, after which he served as a senator on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He later contested the governorship election in 2014 but lost to Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former deputy governor who left the opposition party for SDP in May this year has been criticised by PDP members in the state for his defection.

He faulted the claims that he defected because he knew he would not get the party’s ticket, saying the effect of his departure was evident on the PDP in the state.

Senator Omisore said, “Since I left the PDP, PDP in Osun State has been dead. The point is that Omisore was PDP in Osun State and the PDP was Omisore.”

“The point I left was the fact that I foresaw lack of internal democracy,” he claimed. “Our convention was held, party officers were chosen; the National Working Committee (NWC) now cancelled all convention decisions against the Supreme Court judgement.”

Responding to those questioning his credibility to contest in the coming poll, the SDP candidate asked his critics not to be in a haste and wait for the outcomes of the election.

He also played down the claims that he was desperate to become a governor, stressing that the electorate would decide who they want to succeed Governor Aregbesola.

“The people determine their leader, the people determine who is popular, the people determine who is credible,” said Omisore.

“I’m not desperate, if not I won’t go to any party. The people of Osun State have an interest in Omisore, not any party.”

Jega disappointed me on how he conducted the 2015 general election- GEJ says

In a book scheduled to be launched on Friday April 28th, former spokesperson of late President Musa Yar’Adua and Chairman of Thisday editorial board, Segun Adeniyi, revealed that Former President Goodluck Jonathan was unhappy with the manner former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, went about conducting the 2015 general election which he lost in to President Buhari. Part of the book quotes Jonathan to have said;

“I was disappointed by Jega because I still cannot understand what was propelling him to act the way he did in the weeks preceding the election. As at the first week in February 2015 when about 40 percent of Nigerians had not collected their PVCs, Jega said INEC was ready to conduct an election in which millions of people would be disenfranchised.”

Jonathan is also quoted to have accused that Americans were urging Jega to go on with the elections despite the fact that some Nigerians had not collected their voters card.

“Of course, the Americans were encouraging him to go ahead yet they would never do such a thing in their own country. How could we have cynically disenfranchised about a third of our registered voters for no fault of theirs and still call that a credible election? The interesting thing was that the opposition also supported the idea of going on with the election that was bound to end in confusion” he said

Jonathan in the book defended his decision to postpone the election by six weeks.

“When the military and security chiefs demanded for more time to deal with the insurgency, the reasons were genuine. As at February 2015, it would have been very difficult to vote in Gombe, Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states. But moment all the arms and ammunition that had been ordered finally arrived, the military was able to use them to degrade the capacity of Boko Haram to the level in which they posed the threat to the election.”

INEC begins PVC distribution in Lagos April 29

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will begin distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in Lagos State on April 29.
Femi Akinbiyi, Head of Publicity and Protocol, INEC in Lagos, said in a statement that the step was important, especially in preparation for the July 22 local government elections in the state.
He said: “INEC will as from Saturday, April 29 begin distribution of Permanent Voter Card (PVC) in all the 245 Registration Areas in the state.
“This is purely for the purpose of the Local Government elections coming up soonest in the state.
“The exercise is for those that have registered before but had not collected their PVCs. It will last for five Saturdays starting from Saturday, April 29 to Saturday, May 27.”
According to him, any eligible resident who is in doubt of the Registration Area of the Polling Unit of where he or she registered can contact the Electoral Officer for the local government.
“The nationwide Continuous Voter’s Registration (CVR) exercise will commence throughout the state as from April 27 and remains continuous all the year round.
“The CVR will be in all the 20 INEC local government offices in the state between the hours of 9am and 3pm, excluding public holidays.
“All residents that have reached the age of 18 years after the last registration exercise are to come out and register.
“Also, all registered voters who have their Temporary Voters Cards but whose names are not on register of voters and those that are above 18 years but could not register in the last registration exercise are eligible to register.”
He said that registered voters who were seeking transfer of the PVC could also come for registration.Voter-register-INEC-2015-election-620x345
