On the 17th February 2018, the iRead to Live Initiative organized a Debate and Spelling Bee Competition for Students of LA Middle School Ifetedo, Ife South Local Government, State of Osun.
Dignitaries present at the event were the Vice Principal Mr Afolabi O.Y and Mr. Odekunle , the English Teacher.
In attendance were also the Director(s) of the initiative, President of the Osun State University Debate Club, Akomolafe Oyindamola , who encouraged theStudents generally on how to be an outstanding Debater matching their Oratory skills with constant practice.
Chairman, Osun State University Moot and Mock Society, Oyetayo Peter, the immediate Past Vice President of the Law Student Society, Osun State University, Adebayo Mariam,and Students of the Osun State University, College of Law Ifetedo Campus.
The Executive Director of the initiative, Jacob Olaoluwa, SULE gave the Welcome address in which he thanked Almighty God for giving him the privilege to conceive such a vision and most importantly been blessed with a Team that shares similar commitment and vision of giving back to the community (Ifetedo, State of Osun) hosting their university particularly in Advocating for the Sustainable Development Goals of Quality and Equitable Education for All.
Jacob also reaffirmed his confidence in the Judges and their grading system, he expressed his gratitude to the entire management of the school for their support thus far stating that Education remains the best tool with which one can change the World for the best.
Finally, he reiterated the Theme QUALITY AND EQUITABLE EDUCATION FOR ALL and Topic of the Debate Competition , THE PRESENT CONDITION OF IFETEDO COMMUNITY HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS and encouraged the competitors to show good sense of sportsmanship.
Shortly after the welcome address, the Debate competition started. Six Students participated in the debate, three students argued for the motion while others argued against the motion.
Indeed it was a refreshing time and the students very articulate in their presentations.
The panel of Judges for the Debate competition were; Onipede Boluwatife, the Chief Judge, a 500 level Law Student, Christopher Inyang, Fourth Year Law Student and also the Lord Advocate For Yusuf Ali Liberty Chambers, Bakare Sulaiman, Fourth year law student and also the Director of Advocacy for the initiative, Oyedemi Abiodun, Fourth year Law Student and also the Deputy Speaker of the Law Student Representative Council, and Idowu Christianah who served as the time keeper for the competition.
Okewale Faith and Fabinu Oyindamola , who are both Final Year Law students moderated the Spelling Bee competition alongside other the Judges.
The spelling Bee featured a total of (18) eighteen students from Jss1 – 3. The students performed excellently well in their own little capacity and they were judged individually.
The spelling bee was divided into two rounds and the students were allowed to make two attempts.
Six students were disqualified during the first round. After the second round there were four ties. All the directors of the initiative present were happy about their performances, noting that our efforts as tutors in teaching these young scholars were not in vain.
The competition ended and winners were announced to the audience by the judges in reverse order.
Fakunle Aanu emerged Third, Oladimeji Damilare was announced as the Second while Ajayi Idris emerged as the First position during the Spelling Bee.
For the debate competition, Aderibigbe Moses emerged Third, Adesujo Pelumi Second while Fawole Modupe was crowned the Winner of the competition. Ugobadia Daniel was recognised specially because of his accuracy in speech, boldness, courage , and conduct during the competition.
Gifts were presented by All Directors of the initiative to the winners and participants for the Spelling Bee and Debate competition.
Mr Odekunle gave the Closing remarks on behalf of the management of the School and also presented gifts to the First Position for the Debate Competition.
Indeed , it was a refreshing time for every participants and competitors.
