IBADAN URBAN FASHION WEEK: Developing the growth of fashion in Africa

How does the fashion industry affect development in Africa?

Some significant developments have taken place in African fashion over the last 5 years.

The first of these has to do with perception: African fabrics and fashion items are no longer seen by western audiences and buyers solely as “traditional” wear (which was always just another way of saying what Africans made and wore lacked the finesse of western fashion).

Hand in hand with this has been the increasing use of African textiles and other craft and fashion elements by western designers, such as Louis Vuittons use of the Kenyan Shuke in its Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

Traditional wears are now made in modern ways, which can now be compared with any designs across the world, we as a continent are growing to be a formidable force in the fashion industry and nigeria is a leading force in this category.

With this in view Ibadan urban fashion week is working in line with this project as we seek an Africa as a centre piece of fashion.
