UNDERGRADUATES CHARGED ON SELF-ACTUALISATION TO AID EMPLOYABILITY

 Students of higher institutions of learning have been charged to strive to develop themselves along with their education so as to acquire useful knowledge and skills required to make them fit for the labour market.

At a seminar organised for students of the department of  Office Technology Management (OTM), Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State by a group under the auspices of Prison BreIMG-20160829-WA0004ak Nigeria, various resource persons, ranging from academics to motivational speakers urged the students be focused and buckle up for future challenges.

The Chairman of Local Organizing Committee of the Prison Break 2016, Jibril Babangida, said that no fewer than 500 students attended the seminar which was held at Olagunsoye Oyinlola Hall.

Speaking to our correspondent, Mr Tolulope Isaac the initiator of the seminar said the initiative was aimed at liberating graduates from joblessness.

According to him, “Prison Break is to get people free, especially the youths, from mental captivity. We realise that there is a kind of knowledge gap. I’m using my personal resources to do this and I consider it as my contribution to the society, “he said.

 Isaac who also graduated from OTM department said the aim of the programme is to capture the mentality of the youths and guide them to become successful in life. He added that he was doing so as his contribution to the society through his alma Mata.

A lecturer from OTM department, Mr Folorunso Oluwole in his lecture charged the students to add value to themselves through seriousness and dedication to their studies as well as the acquisition of relevant skills that could give them an edge among their peers.  IMG-20160829-WA0002

“Apart from obtaining certificates from higher institutions, you must also have knowledge of Information Communication Technology to give you extra value beyond your diploma or degree. Knowledge of ICT would make you to perform better in office”.

“It is unfortunate today that many graduates are not employable and they would not be able to get jobs because they are not employed owing to several factors including poor communication skill.

Also speaking, a motivational Speaker, Mr Bukola Idowu urged the students to manage their time well, discard bad friends and cultivate the habit of doing things accurately with speed and thereby become the delight of their employers.

“You must acquire useful knowledge and skills. It is very important that you prove to the employers that you are an asset to them and not a liability. Once you have the capacity to add value, the employer would be willing to give you job”, he said.
