Having to urinate for more than a few times in a day can be disturbing and frustrating, it can also bring some level of distress. Frequent urination is a problem a lot of people deal with and while in most cases, it is not a sign of any serious problem, in some, it may be a sign of an underlying medical condition.
If you find yourself visiting the bathroom frequently in the course of the day and while asleep at night, you have to wake up a couple of times to urinate, you should be concerned. Your frequent urination is not a thing to be ignored; it is worth troubling your doctor about, especially if it is persistent and you can’t find any reasons for it. But you shouldn’t be scared as it may not be anything serious.
There are several possible explanations for your frequent urination. It may either be because you take too much fluid, especially fluids containing alcohol or caffeine or there’s an underlying problem which could either be mild (most likely) or serious (few cases). If you are female, it could also be because you are pregnant.
Other possible causes include:
- Prostate problems
- Some types of medications
- Kidney infection
- Overactive bladder syndrome
- Inflammation of the bladder
- Urinary tract infection (if accompanied by other symptoms like abdominal pain, urgency to urinate and fever)
The only sure way to determine the cause of the problem is when you get checked by your doctor. If it’s something serious, the sooner it is detected and treated, the greater the chances of successful treatment.
