“When I dropped Sade, Olamide apparently liked it, and the whole YBNL crew liked it. So he called me and said he really liked my sound, and didn’t want it to change, that he would love to work with me. “I didn’t see it coming, I didn’t lobby for it, I didn’t do anything, I didn’t think about it at all.”

Adekunle’s four singles so far has been heavy on storytelling. They both take listeners through a tale of romance, and aspirational prayers which have been instrumental in the success of both singles. In contrast, the rest of the YBNL artistes are pacy rappers. The singer believes that there is a connection between his genre and indigenous rap.

“I guess it just works because I am indigenous too as well, I speak Yoruba, English, pidgin…and then my sound identifies with the street somehow. So there’s a sync somehow. “

“Having dabbled into a lot of sounds before I decided to go to something different, I have done Pop, R&B, a lot of Rock…and it just wasn’t working for me. I like it, but people didn’t see it.” Adekunle said.

“So I now sat down, and I think I have stress, and I’m heavy on singing Yoruba, and I happen t know a lot of indie sounds…I thought about it, ‘let me marry these two sounds together, let’s do Highlife, Folk, a little bit of Pop and Rock…I thought about it when I wanted to release ‘Sade’…I think it’s foreign, and it’s foreign and the local content, so let’s call it urban Highlife.”

Adekunle’s Urban Highlife is set to have an album this year, and fans can’t wait to taste of it.
