Abiola’s family applauds Buhari June 12 declarations

Family of Late Chief MKO Abiola has written to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for awarding their father the nation’s highest honour and declaring June 12 as the new democracy day.

The President announced the award on Wednesday and declared June 12 as the new democracy day which has been celebrated on May 29 for the past 18 years. Buhari also honoured Abiola’s vice presidential candidate, Babagana Kingibe and late activist, Gani Fawehinmi with the second highest national honour, GCON.

Kola Abiola on behalf of the family, in a letter to the president, dated June 6, 2018, said he was appreciating the President’s decisions. “Mr President, I thank you earnestly for heeding our plea where others before you did not, whilst conveying the assurances of my highest esteem”

“Your Excellency, your decision to also designate June 12 as Democracy Day rights the wrongs done to all the nation-builders and heroes that produced the democratic credentials on which the Nigerian polity now thrives.”

“We are profoundly grateful to the people from all corners of Nigeria that worked tirelessly to ensure the most free and fair elections in our nation’s history in 1993, fought valiantly for the Hope ’93 mandate given to Bashorun Abiola by the Nigerian people and died trying to protect the mandate” the letter reads.

Meanwhile, the Senate yesterday during their plenary, resolved to seek the announcement of the election results, ensure that all allowances and entitlements to the families of M.K.O Abiola and Babagana Kingibe be made available to them and declare June 12 a public holiday.
